Now this I remember. We had a school play based on this film. I played the part of the British gentleman Reginald F. ‘R. J.’ Johnston, Ms Sunshine Dizon played as ‘Lady Aisin-Gioro’, and we had the part Pu Yi played by 2 “actors”. The 3-8year old Pu Yi was played by Alvin Espedido while the grown-up(ish) Pu Yi by Michael Batillano.

This play that we did back then wasn’t meant to be en grande. It wasn’t meant to beat out the seniors as well. We just wanted to have fun. And we did all that and a bag of chips.

Synopsis: A dramatic history of Pu Yi, the last of the Emperors of China, from his lofty birth and brief reign in the Forbidden City, the object of worship by half a billion people; through his abdication, his decline and dissolute lifestyle; his exploitation by the invading Japanese, and finally to his obscure existence as just another peasant worker in the People’s Republic.

Cast: John Lone; Joan Chen; Peter O’Toole; Dong Liang
